Early start to get up to Palamides Castle (it was closed the previous day so even Michael had not seen it properly). Impressive with impressive view back over Nafplio and, oh joy, ice covered puddles! We then began our drive to Athens which would then see us fly to Granada, Spain and then drive for 2hrs to Ronda order to get to reach our apartment at midnight!
On the way we stopped at Corinth Canal which is a 7km canal cut throught the narrowest point of the peninsula and save boats the long trip round. Nero had the idea first but it finally happened about 150 years ago. After a quick view at the road bridge crossing the middle (pictured) we went to one canal end where we watched the submergable bridge submerge to allow a boat to travel OVER it. Merryn is pictured explaining operation of the bridge on which she stands next to the white engine house.
Food highlights for greece:
Fiona - vinsanto mushrooms, gyros, feta (pictured at submersible bridge)
Meg - chocolate mousse for brekky
Merryn - yoghurt and honey
Michael - stuffed tomatoes
All agreed that "stolen oranges taste the best".
*Educational Corner: From our art gallery visit yesterday Philhellenics were foreign Greek supporters (esp in the Greek revolution).
