Mycenae was the capital of the eponymous empire about 1500BC and predates the Ancient Greeks. The picture shows Meg duly impressed by quote "the same old rocks re-arranged
in a different place". The next shows Fiona dramatising the famous Lion Gate above her to aid visitors' understanding. In addition to identifying the home of heaps of Mycenean gold things which we had already seen at the Archaelogical Museum, the view itself was amazing and we got to walk down the slightly claustrophobic underground steps to the water cistern the clever Myceans had installed inside the fortress (with water piped underground from a creek/spring). Lunch nearby included some stuffed tomatoes and aubourgines with tomato that were widely praised by visiting Aussie archaeologists.
Back at Nafplio the younger types shopped for shoes and lollies amongst other merchandise. The more mature in years walked around the headland on a cool path and enjoyed the SMH crossword with donutty things and baklava. Merryn has been limiting herself to one baklava per day - both maximum and minimum ... so we are sometimes searching for them at the correct time of day.
An impressive Lion Gate -- more so with F in front. How restrained, Merryn, to have only one piece of baklava a day! The bike route sounds interesting but 25!! Can understand "various girls". Can remember ice covered puddles when I rode to school in the olden days. Wondered whether you would have any connection with the Greek tragedy.
ReplyDelete13 homes destroyed by fire around Adelaide -- authorities feel they will find more when they have a chance to further investigate. Expect things to rev up again on Wednesday.

Great photos, thanks for the updates and email with New year wishes. Tell Meg and Fiona that Caroline agrees with their feelings about hills and that the same alps that stretch all the way to Brittany must also stretch all the way to Greece. Of 'Nuns + Nanas' seems like a fantastic day on backroads, country lanes laden with produce and meeting interesting people. Looking at that plate of donutty things... Merryn might be showing restraint, doesn't look like anyone else is...
